Joyce Koons Honda Buick GMC is proud to serve its community in the 2011 Regional SeaPerch Underwater Robot Competition.  TheSeaPerch Underwater Robot Competition is a contest between high school students to see who can design and control the superior underwater robot.

David Hish, Vice President and Marketing director, was one of the judges for the relay and maneuvering portions of the pool segment. “I was very impressed at how well the students worked as a team to complete the difficult underwater challenges,” said Hish.

Three teams each of the two days will move on to the National SeaPerch Challenge in April of 2012 at the Manassas Park Community Center in Manassas, Virginia. There, the students will have access to representatives from Lockheed Martin and Micron Technology. They will also see demonstration from the FBI’s Bomb Squad. In honor of the 150^th anniversary of the Battle Of Manassas, the students can also go on a tour of the historic battlefield.

Honda SeaPerch Underwater Robot Competition

This year’s challenge involves the use of Lift Bags in diving and salvage operations. A lift bag is piece of diving equipment consisting of large, air-tight bag with straps, which is used to lift heavy objects underwater by means of the bag’s buoyancy. The heavy object can then either be moved horizontally underwater or sent unaccompanied to the surface.   The volume of the bag determines its lifting capacity: a 100-litre (4 cu ft) bag can lift a 100-kilogram (220 lb) underwater object. 

Each team is given a SeaPerch kit that can be modified within a $20 limit. This gives the young engineers a little room for experimentation, but still keeps all the teams on a level playing field.
